Particularly, it reinforced how much I relate to the character of August.Īugust made me feel seen in a very specific way. Reading this story a second time made me love it all the more. He perfectly captures the tone and personality of each character. It’s narrated by Charlie Thurston and wow, he did such a fantastic job of telling this story. I recently came back to this story as the audiobook just came out this week.

Again, no spoilers but they have a, uh, interesting relationship, to say the least. The story doesn’t just keep you guessing about what’s going on with Jack, it also keeps you guessing about the nature of the relationship between Jack and August. I think I stayed up until 2 am and I remember closing the book and just being breathless. If I recall correctly, I read this book in one day. It’s told from third-person POV, with August as our MC. Has he discovered magical powers, or is something else going on? The story keeps you guessing right up until the very end. One day, Jack starts to see visions of another world. To give a short and spoiler free summary of the book, August and Jack have been best friends since they were 7 years old. This is a dark, intense story about trauma, codependency, parental neglect, mental illness, two kids trying to keep it together - it’s raw, it’s heavy, it’s heartbreaking, it’s likely one of my all time favorite books. There are funny moments, sure, but if you go into this thinking you’re in for a fun time, you’re gonna be quite mistaken. Rather, it’s like little slices of moments in the character’s lives, sewn together to the tell the tale of two 17 year old boys: August and Jack. The story is not told in a traditional chapter format. It wasn’t quite like any other story I’d read before.
